Another reason for Switch’s popularity is its versatility. It can be played either as a handheld device, used like a normal console when on the move, or plugged into a TV and played like every other console on the market. The Nintendo Switch is popular with young people as well as seasoned gamers, so has a good wedge of the market. Let’s take a look at some of the best games to play on your Nintendo Switch.
The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild
The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, an action and adventure game, has been one of the most popular titles in the famous Zelda franchise, since its release in 2017 by Nintendo on both the Switch and the Wii U. As always, the player controls Link and must face off against enemies in order to save the day. This time the enemy is Calamity Ganon.
Having been in the works since 2013, Breath of the Wild was highly anticipated, and fans were able to get hold of a tapestry map, soundtrack CD and Switch case, by ordering the special edition. This collectible content made the game highly sought after. It’s rated 97/100 on the Switch, according to Metacritic, and has sold over 23 million copies so far.
Animal Crossing: New Horizons
Having been released just when most people were heading into their respective countries’ lockdowns, Animal Crossing: New Horizons was a smash hit and is still enjoyed by millions of players today, over 18 months later. The player controls a character and is tasked with developing an island any way they choose while populating it with other characters.
With a Metacritic score of 90/100, New Horizons was met with universal acclaim and quickly became the most popular game in the franchise. According to recent data, the game has sold more than 32 million copies, becoming the second highest-selling game in the US in 2021, only being beaten by EA’s massive title FIFA 21.
Super Mario Odyssey
Super Mario Odyssey is one of the best-selling Nintendo Switch games of all time and for good reason. This Mario game has helped reinvent the franchise adding a sense of originality and freshness into a series that can, at times, feel a little tired and repetitive. Super Mario Odyssey keeps what is loved about Mario platform games while also staying relevant in today’s market.
The game features a new sidekick for Mario in Cappy, a sentient Mario plumber cap that joins in the fun. It’s sold over 20 million copies at the time of writing and has been massively enjoyed by players which is evident in its rating of 97/100 on Metacritic.
Super Smash Bros. Ultimate
The fifth game in the popular Super Smash Bros. franchise, Ultimate provides everything fans have come to expect while also giving the series a new breath of life with 89 characters available for players to choose from. The character roster doesn’t just feature Nintendo characters though. There is now a significant number of third-party characters.
The game was released back in 2018 and was nominated for the E3 game of the year award, while it won the Nintendo Game of the Year award in the IGN and Gamescom award ceremonies. Super Smash Bros. Ultimate massively outsold its predecessors with the game’s 24 million sales placing it as the third highest-selling Switch title of all time.
A game that, surprisingly, isn’t a Nintendo exclusive title, Rocket League is a massively popular game that is enjoyed by millions worldwide, despite now being 6 years old. The game combines soccer with car racing and a player must score goals using the car’s rocket boosters and crazy in-game physics to gain an edge.
This is a massively popular eSport title, with a number of tournaments played each year, yielding prizes in excess of $100,000. The game’s developer, Psyonix, claims to have sold over 10 million digital copies and more than 1 million physical copies. The title has now been enjoyed by over 40 million players thanks to its recent free-to-play access.
Undertale enjoys a huge cult following today, with the 2015 RPG taking inspiration from popular video game series Mario and British comedy series Mr. Bean. The game was designed entirely by developer American Toby Fox, except for some of the artwork.
And also game was nominated for more than a dozen awards, winning four and finishing as a runner-up in one other. The game finished the year in almost every ‘best game of the year’ list, with both critics and players loving this title. A related title, called Delatrune, was released by Fox in 2018, with the second chapter released three years later in 2021.
